Control your Mac with your Apple Remote(s)

Not only Front Row, but also iTunes, PowerPoint (tm), Keynote, QuickTime Player, VLC Player, ...

You might not know that every Apple Remote is different, but iRed can distinguish up to 256 different Apple Remotes. You can dedicate one Apple Remote to iTunes, another one to iPhoto. You don't need to buy hundreds of these - any programmable remote may learn Apple Remote codes.

Control your HiFi/DVD/TV/Satellite devices, right from your Mac

iRed was built with infrared in mind. In conjunction with a device like the IRTrans USB or LAN module, you can transmit IR codes to your devices. While sitting at your Mac, you can control your amplifier or switch channels on your satellite receiver with one click. With iRed's trigger features, it is even possible to use system-wide shortcuts, or you can use iRed's built-in timers for scheduled recordings!

All this and more from your iPhone or iPod Touch!

Everything which can be controlled from the Mac, is now at your fingertips on the iPhone or iPod Touch.

Control your HiFi/video devices, do your PowerPoint presentation, even send your Mac to sleep, all remotely from the sofa in your local WLAN or on-the-go via the Internet! No need for "jailbreaking" the iPhone, because the built-in Mobile Safari is enough to talk to iRed.

A native iPhone application is available from the App Store, too! It's called iRedTouch.

Supported Modules

If you want to control your TV, audio, DVD, ..., an infrared (IR) module is required.

iRed was built for the IRTrans transceivers. These are available as USB or LAN modules, are small and have a sleek design. The infrared capabilities are very good, they can learn and transmit about every IR code.

More infos ....

License, System Requirements, etc.

iRed2 is shareware and costs $15 / 10 Euro, respectively. Licenses may be purchased securely via Kagi (under construction!) within minutes.

If you want to add an IRTrans module, there is an additional license fee of $20 / 15 Euro per device. However, if you purchase an IRTrans, you'll get both licenses for free. Please ask for the Mac version when ordering an IRTrans from IRTrans GmbH.

iRed 2 requires Mac OS X 10.4.11 at least, it runs best on Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard).

Upgrades from iRed 1.x: Purchasers of 2008 and 2009 will get a free upgrade, all others require a new single license ($15/10 Euro), but there is no need for a "device license", too. You'll be contacted soon.

(*) This requires an IRTrans USB or LAN device. See this page for details.

March '09 Discounts

In March '09 there is a special discount price for iRedTouch and for a special IRTrans module, too!

For this month, iRedTouch' price is lowered by $5 (other currencies accordingly), and you can save another $20, if you get this special IRTrans offer as an US customer.

iRed2 - Restart

First of all: I wish you a happy new year 2009!

iRed2 in 2008:

it should have been the year of iRed2, but something went wrong. One problem was the release of iRedTouch, which brought IR to a lot of iPhone or iPod touch owners. Even though both iRedTouch and iRed2 were developed side by side, iRed2 fell behind.

While iRed2's release date was postponed again and again, some major problems with this application were never adressed. iRed2 never reached the level of quality which I expect from a "release version". These are the main issues:

  • stability: still crashs on save, hangs on use
  • reliability: IRTrans modules get lost or were not found on startup
  • usability: remote editor is powerful but not very usable

The last months I tried to fix all open issues, but mainly the stability issues could'nt be solved in the end. I don't want to bother you with technical details, but it looks like I have made a failure when I choose a specific data model technology back in 2007.

So what's next?

It was a hard decision, but now I am convinced that a fresh start is overdue! I will cut iRed2 into pieces, trash the existing data model, make a blend with good ol' technology from iRed 1, write some new code and mix it all together into an application that you can rely on and I can be proud of.

Of course, this will take time and stress you for more patience, but in the end we will all benefit.

Just rest assured: iRed2 is the center of my application suite and I have great plans for it.

Upgrades? Licenses? Compatibility?

I keep my promise: all purchasers of iRed 1 in 2008 or later will get a free upgrade to iRed2. And, all remotes (or "VRCs") which are created in iRed 1 or iRed2 will be compatible to the new iRed2. Your exisiting work will not get lost, so you may work on with your current remotes and codes and action archives.
