irtrans conflicts with snow leopard 10.6.2?

hi, i was wondering if you've seen this before or can offer any guidance....i have a mac mini running 10.6.2 and eyetv, ired2 and the usb driver for the irtrans...the os sees the usb driver as a usb modem and doesn't handle it properly. basically, all is well recording eyetv programs, switching channels, etc., but playback is another issue...i get errors in the system logs for IO issues and at some point during playback, the machine restarts. if i pull the plug on the irtrans module, the machine functions normally...it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. the only reason i even tried to pull the irtrans module, was since the os determined it was something other than what it is.

thanks, pete

Possible Help

Hi Pete,

only once I heard of similar problems. Have you tried to deactivate the entry in the Network Preferences? Maybe that helps. Or you can remove the entry in the Network Preferences at all. It looks like Mac OS X will not ask to configure this device again.

tried that

hi,

i have deleted the item from network preferences and it hasn't reappeared, etc. the bigger issue, is still that the device causes a crash when playing back video from dvd player, front row or eyetv....is there a newer driver for this device that would work with ired2?

Wait ..., that's IR noise!

Wait, you say that playing back video on your Mac will lead to heavy IO on the IRTrans?

The only thing I can imagine is that the IRTrans is seeing to much "IR noise". Maybe a different placement of the module will help. This is no driver problem. When the IRTrans flashes green whenever you playback video (that is have heavy screen action), than that's a good inidcator that the IRTrans shouldbe placed not with direct line-of-sight to the monitor.

it can't be that

i had trouble with the irtrans a couple of years ago, since it was "too powerful" and would send signals throughout the room in which it's placed and change channels on other set top boxes, so i built a cardboard "tent" around it to shield it from signals and to sheild other items from it. it's also placed on the backside of the piece of furniture that houses the mac mini and the tv, etc. so, it's not in any direct line of sight.

ok, it's not the driver

so, after reading your last reply, i decided to leave the driver alone and instead i quit ired2. without it running, the mac mini works fine. dvdplayer, frontrow and eyetv all play videos without crashing the machine and having it restart.

is it still possible to run ired1 on snow leopard 10.6.2?

red1 has the same issue

i quit ired2, downloaded and setup my tuner on ired1 and did a test, the machine crashed when ired1 was running while playing back eyetv video.

Please mail ...

Pete, I have no more ideas. Maybe we should try to solve this through mail.

bad cable

well, after a few emails and lots of trial and error, it looks like it was a bad usb cable to the irtrans module. why that would cause a crash is anyone's guess, but with the new cable, all playback is normal again.
